Pharmacological characterization and expression of VIP and PACAP receptors in isolated cranial arteries of the rat
Vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) and pituitary adenylate cyclase activating peptide (PACAP) are potent vasodilators in animals and humans. PACAP infusion but not VIP infusion precipitates migraine attacks in migraine patients. The vascular effects of VIP and the two varieties of PACAP (PACAP-27 and PACAP-38) were investigated versus selective antagonists in segments of rat middle cerebral arter
Search for resonant WZ production in the WZ -> lvl ' l ' channel in root(s)=7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector
A generic search is presented for a heavy particle decaying to WZ -> lvl'l' (l, l' = e, mu) final states. The data were recorded by the ATLAS detector in root s = 7 TeV pp collisions at the Large Hadron Collider and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1.02 fb(-1). The transverse mass distribution of the selected WZ candidates is found to be consistent with the standard model expectation. Upp
Circulating nucleosomes as epigenetic biomarkers in pancreatic cancer.
To improve the prognosis of patients with pancreatic cancer, new biomarkers are required for earlier, pre-symptomatic diagnosis. Epigenetic mutations take place at the earliest stages of tumorigenesis and therefore offer new approaches for detecting and diagnosing disease. Nucleosomes are the repeating subunits of DNA and histone proteins that constitute human chromatin. Because of their release i
Generation of a New Cystatin C-Based Estimating Equation for Glomerular Filtration Rate by Use of 7 Assays Standardized to the International Calibrator.
Many different cystatin C-based equations exist for estimating glomerular filtration rate. Major reasons for this are the previous lack of an international cystatin C calibrator and the nonequivalence of results from different cystatin C assays.
Au-Seeded Growth of Vertical and in-Plane III-V Nanowires on Graphite Substrates.
Graphene is promising as a transparent, flexible, and possibly cost-effective substrate for nanowire-based devices. We have investigated Au-seeded III-V nanowire growth with graphite as a model substrate. The highest yield of undoped vertical nanowires was found for InAs, but we also observed vertical nanowires for the InP, GaP, and GaAs materials. The yield of vertical nanowires for GaP and GaAs
Standard first-line chemotherapy with or without nintedanib for advanced ovarian cancer (AGO-OVAR 12): a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase 3 trial.
Angiogenesis is a target in the treatment of ovarian cancer. Nintedanib, an oral triple angiokinase inhibitor of VEGF receptor, platelet-derived growth factor receptor, and fibroblast growth factor receptor, has shown activity in phase 2 trials in this setting. We investigated the combination of nintedanib with standard carboplatin and paclitaxel chemotherapy in patients with newly diagnosed advan
Human Carotid Plaques With High Levels of Interleukin-16 Are Associated With Reduced Risk for Cardiovascular Events.
Interleukin-16 (IL-16) functions as a regulator of T-cell growth and acts as an inducer of cell migration. The aim of this study was to determine whether IL-16 measured in human carotid plaques was associated with symptoms (eg, stroke, transient ischemic attack, or amaurosis fugax), markers of plaque stability, and postoperative cardiovascular events.
A Matter of Time: Revisiting Growth Convergence in China
China’s unbalanced growth strategy has seemingly fostered growing inter-regional growth disparities and there is little evidence of wealth trickling down from richer provinces to poorer provinces. Standard convergence tests, however, may be ill specified to detect underlying long-term growth trends in small samples due to the pronounced and frequent inter-regional short-term fluctuations. Our pape
Hydrodynamic Forces on Macromolecules Protruding from Lipid Bilayers Due to External Liquid Flows.
It has previously been observed that an externally applied hydrodynamic shear flow above a fluid lipid bilayer can change the local concentration of macromolecules that are associated with the lipid bilayer. The external liquid flow results in a hydrodynamic force on molecules protruding from the lipid bilayer, causing them to move in the direction of the flow. However, there has been no quantitat
Minimalist C/case
This article discusses A-licensing and case from a minimalist perspective, pursuing the idea that argument NPs cyclically enter a number of A-relations, rather than just a single one, resulting in event-licensing, case-licensing and phi-licensing. While argument case commonly reflects Voice/v-relations, canonical A-movement is driven by higher elements, either in the C-T system or in a superordina
Hemospray Application in Nonvariceal Upper Gastrointestinal Bleeding: Results of the Survey to Evaluate the Application of Hemospray in the Luminal Tract.
Hemospray TM (TC-325) is a novel hemostatic agent licensed for use in nonvariceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding (NVUGIB) in Europe.
Preface
Challenging claims in the study of migratory birds and climate change.
Recent shifts in phenology in response to climate change are well established but often poorly understood. Many animals integrate climate change across a spatially and temporally dispersed annual life cycle, and effects are modulated by ecological interactions, evolutionary change and endogenous control mechanisms. Here we assess and discuss key statements emerging from the rapidly developing stud
Discrimination of ST deviation caused by acute coronary occlusion from normal variants and other abnormal conditions, using computed electrocardiographic imaging based on 12-lead ECG.
Many graphical methods for displaying ST-segment deviation in the ECG have been tried for enhancing decision-making in patients with suspected acute coronary syndromes. Computed electrocardiographic imaging (CEI), based on a mathematical inverse solution, has been recently applied to transform ST-J point measurements made in conventional 12-lead ECG into a display of epicardial potentials in bull'
A Quantitative Balian-Low Theorem
We study functions generating Gabor Riesz bases on the integer lattice. The classical Balian-Low theorem (BLT) restricts the simultaneous time and frequency localization of such functions. We obtain a quantitative estimate on their Zak transform that extends both this result and the more general (p,q) Balian-Low theorem. Moreover, we establish a family of quantitative amalgam-type Balian-Low theor
Can there only be one? Towards a post-paradigmatic service marketing approach
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to unlock positions regarding the goods/services dichotomy in service marketing and to offer an argument that treats goods and services on an ontologically equal basis. Design/methodology/approach – A close reading of influential texts that argue in favor of a service-dominant logic (SDL) and new paradigms in service marketing. Findings – Both the SDL pro
A Holocene peat record in the central South Atlantic: an archive of precipitation changes
Peat deposits from the littoral part of the wetland 2nd Pond on Nightingale Island in the central South Atlantic have been analysed to investigate the Holocene climate development on the island and to test a hypothesis about regionally persistent humidity variations. A variety of proxies were analysed - total carbon and nitrogen, biogenic silica, diatoms, amount of organic matter, macrofossils and
Semantic profiles of antonymic adjectives in discourse
This study has two goals: Firstly, to give an account of the semantic organization of individually used antonymic adjectives in discourse, and secondly, based on these finding, and previous work on antonymic meanings, contribute to a comprehensive theoretical account of their representation within the framework of Cognitive Linguistics. The hypothesis is that the members of the pairs are used in t
APP/APLP2 expression is required to initiate endosome-nucleus-autophagosome trafficking of glypican-1-derived heparan sulfate.
Anhydromannose (anMan)-containing heparan sulfate (HS) derived from the proteoglycan glypican-1 (Gpc-1) is generated in endosomes by an endogenously or ascorbate induced SNO-catalyzed reaction. Processing of the amyloid precursor protein (APP) and APP-like protein 2 (APLP2) by β- and γ-secretases into amyloid beta (Aβ) and Aβ-like peptides also takes place in these compartments. Moreover, anMan-co
