Inventing topoi in the progymnasmata: : Kefalaion as the organon of rhetoric

Rhetoric is a teaching tradition. The rhetorical exercises in the progymnasmata are the main method in which rhetoric has been taught throughout history. These exercises are organized according to difficulty, the material covered, the rhetorical genre, the canons of rhetoric and the disposition of the speech. The main organizing principle is however the topoi for inventing the speech or text in ea

Passive learning of speech sounds associated with microstructure of fronto-temporo-parietal but not fronto-striatal white matter tracts : possible implications for implicit language learning tasks

Language learners must become able to perceive and process new speech sounds in order to segment words and sentences. The process of obtaining these skills is, to a high degree, implicit. However, research attempting to find the neuroanatomical correlates of such an implicit learning system has mostly used artificial grammar or serial reaction time tasks that are lacking in linguistic relevance. ILanguage learning involves implicitly acquiring a sensitivity for novel speech sounds and phonological structure [1]. Implicit learning skill differs between individuals [2] and this individual difference could potentially be reflected in the quality of white matter tracts relevant for speech perception and production [3] or for implicit sequence learning [4]. Implicit learning of speech has been

3D nano-tomography using coherent X-rays

X-rays allow to non-destructively investigate biological, chemical or physical processes at thenano-scale. Their high penetration depth in matter allows to investigate samples even in-side sample environments, which would be difficult with complementary methods such astransmission electron microscopy (TEM). Determining the rational areas in the UK meat supply chain for introducing biosensors

Despite the importance of the UK in meat production in the EU and its increasing population, there is still a lack of rapid, accurate and inexpensive technique to determine an appropriate durability for meat products. As the population increases, the demand for safe and of satisfactory food by both consumers and government raises, so as the demand for a favourable tool to ensure the safety of food

On the evaluation of pre-hospital telemedicine in acute stroke care

Purpose: To propose a blueprint of how the policymakers responsible for health care reforms in the county of Scania (Sweden) could evaluate a prospective stroke care intervention from a societal point of view. More specifically, the intervention will consist in the introduction of telemedicine technology to their ambulance fleet. In addition, key methodological issues, of interest to the policymak

Energy service contracting in Slovenia: Comparison of the barriers and drivers for Energy service contracting development in Germany and Slovenia

Increased energy efficiency is identified as a key strategy to tackle three energy-relatedchallenges (energy security, climate change and economic development) with low trade-offsand huge win-win opportunities. Energy service contracting represents an instrument of thedemand side energy management that enables cost-effective energy savings. However, theinstrument implementation is many times hinde

Galiellalactone Synthetic Studies

Popular Abstract in English Prostate cancer is one of the most common causes of death for men. This disease can be detected at different stages and if it is detected at an initial stage there are many therapies to choose from. However, if it is detected at an advanced stage the options are reduced and most of the treatments are aggressive in an effort to extend the patient’s life. The most common In search for remedies and treatments, science has recurred to Mother Nature. This is where galiellalactone was found, a fungal metabolite isolated from Galiella rufa in 1990. Since then chemists and biologists have been studying its properties and found it to be a potential candidate against castration-resistance prostate cancer (CRPC). The development of a new drug requires many studies of the c

Influence of gender bias in academia : a small experimental study on implicit association

Abstract: Gender inequality is to some extent depending on subconscious gender bias, that is, automatic associations that might mis-favour women in academia. The extent to which gender bias in relation to career choices is present in the population has been investigated during many years in an American-based web project but have not yet been investigated among teachers at LTH. In this study, we le

Data-driven microscopy allows for automated targeted acquisition of relevant data with higher fidelity

Light microscopy is a powerful single-cell technique that allows for quantitative spatial information at subcellular resolution. However, unlike flow cytometry and single-cell sequencing techniques, microscopy has issues achieving high-quality population-wide sample characterization while maintaining high resolution. Here, we present a general framework, data-driven microscopy (DDM), that uses popLight microscopy is a powerful single-cell technique that allows for quantitative spatial information at subcellular resolution. Question intonation in Southern Swedish

Swedish has been generally assumed not to have any well-defined question intonation. However, with respect to Southern Swedish, Lindblad & Gårding (1973) present data showing final rises in polar (Y/N) questions. Gårding (1979) also assumes a broader and higher F0 range in Y/N questions than in statements, particularly on the final focussed word. The present study investigates the extent to wh

Manifesto for an international digital mental health network

AbstractCurrent mental health services across the world remain expert-centric and are based on traditional workflows, mostly using impractical and ineffective electronic record systems or even paper-based documentation. The international network for digital mental health (IDMHN) is comprised of top-level clinicians, regulatory and ICT experts, genetic scientists, and support organizations. Evaluation of the Elekta Synergy concept for patient positioning in image guided radiotherapy

Introduction: The Elekta Synergy machine for external beam radiation therapy is equipped with an x-ray tube for on-line kV imaging and correction of the patient setup. The system can provide both 2D and 3D data for image guided radiotherapy (IGRT). Different aspects of the imaging system (called XVI) has been evaluated, such as image quality, flex of the gantry rotation, accuracy for patient setup

Development of Novel Therapies, Models, and Biomarkers for Osteoclast-Related Diseases

Osteoclasts are derived from hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and form upon stimulation of osteoclast precursors by macrophage colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF) and receptor activator of nuclear factor κΒ ligand (RANKL). Osteoclasts resorb bone by secreting hydrochloric acid, matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and cathepsin K. Monopoly deregulation, ICT capital, and labor productivity growth in the services sector

A divergence in labor productivity growth rates in the services sector has been observed between in particular the euro-area members and the US since the mid-1990’s. The study addresses the question whether deregulation of the telecoms sector contributed to economic development through an elevated effect of ICT capital. The study finds ICT capital to have a positive effect on both real GDP growth

Biosensor-based Methods for Detection of Microcystins as Early Warning Systems

Popular Abstract in English Global invasion of our precious watercourses by cyanobacteria poses great threat to human- and animal health by deteriorating water systems. In fact, this problem is not likely to be solved in the near future as cyanobacteria are associated with pollution of waterways. Consequently, water sources are subject to contamination by natural toxins produced by abundant growthCyanobacteria blooms are a water menace since they produce potent toxins that have been implicated in poisonings and deaths of humans and animals after consumption or contact with cyanotoxin-contaminated water. Of particular concern are cyanotoxins called microcystins, which are hepatotoxic cyclic peptides known to promote development of liver tumors in humans and animals. The high toxicity and in

Caste and Occupational Diversification in Rural India: A long-term analysis.

One of the characteristic features of Indian society is its complex caste system which ranks people into hereditary groups. Most importantly, the foundation of caste association was based on the occupation of each group. And the lowest group within this system have historically been excluded and exploited due to their assigned caste-based occupations. Despite implementing affirmative action polici
