Inflammation and neutrophil recruitment in healing of colonic anastomosis

Sårläkning indelas i olika faser, varav den första utgöres av en inflammatorWound healing is a multistep process with an initial inflammatory response, followed by synthesis of extracellular matrix components and finalized by a repair phase. One main goal was to determine the impact and adhesive mechanisms of neutrophil recruitment in anastomotic healing in the colon. Passive immunization against CD18 abolished anastomotic accumulation of neutrophils, whereas no effect on

Convergence Speed of Coupling Iterations for the Unsteady Transmission Problem

We present an estimate for the convergence rate of the Dirichlet-Neumann iteration for the discretized unsteady transmission problem. Specifically, we consider the coupling of two heat equations on two identical squared domains. The Laplacian is discretized by second order central finite differences and the implicit Euler method is used for the time discretization. For the semidiscrete case, Hensh

Instruments for a European Extremely Large Telescope: the challenges of designing instruments for 30- to 100-m telescopes

Designs for Extremely Large Telescopes (ELTs) are quite well advanced, but the requirements of instruments have had limited impact. Sinceprovision of a suitable environment for instruments is a critical aspectof all telescopes, we outline some well-known and some less-appreciatedchallenges of designing instruments for ELTs. A wide-field spectrometer(WFSPEC) with ~10 arcmin field-of-view, probably w

Inhibitory effect of barusiban and atosiban on oxytocin-induced contractions of myometrium from preterm and term pregnant women

BACKGROUND: A synthetic oxytocin analogue, barusiban, was shown to potently inhibit oxytocin-induced activity of myometrium from term pregnant women. The responsiveness to vasopressin was not influenced by the compound. OBJECTIVE: To test the effect of barusiban and a reference compound, atosiban, on oxytocin-induced activity of myometrium from women at preterm pregnancy in comparison to myometriu

Combining smart card data with data from user-mediated mobile platform survey for longitudinal study of travel behaviour

Smart card data and survey data have different characteristics, which combined have the potential to enrich the total level of information as well as to reduce inherent biases in each dataset. This paper describes a fruitful procedure to use survey data from a smartphone application-based travel survey with prompted recall to validate data from smart card transactions in the same geographical area

Agentic and visual effects of large-scale science research facilties

Large-scale science research facilities, such as those for investigation into the smallest components of physical matter, often consist of buildings with quite extraordinary features as regards shape and scale. These architectures are semiotically interesting in several ways: they have extraordinary outer forms that reflect the their inner activities; they require forms of mediation and planning t

Family members' experiences of care of the dying in residential care homes where the Liverpool Care Pathway was used

Background: Residential care homes (RCHs) are increasingly becoming a common place of death for older people. Aim: The aim of this study was to describe family members' experiences of care of the dying in RCHs where the Liverpool care pathway for the dying patient was used. Methods: This study had a descriptive qualitative study design. Fifteen (n=15) individual interviews were analysed using qual

A lipid-based passivation scheme for nanofluidics

Stretching DNA in nanochannels allows for direct, visual studies of genomic DNA at the single molecule level. In order to facilitate the study of the interaction of linear DNA with proteins in nanochannels, we have implemented a highly effective passivation scheme based on lipid bilayers. We show long-term passivation of nanochannel surfaces to several relevant reagents and demonstrate that the pe

Separation of deformable hydrogel microparticles in deterministic lateral displacement devices

To better understand how deformable and non-spherical particles behave in sorting devices based on deterministic lateral displacement we generate models of biological particles with tunable size, shape and mechanical properties using stop-flow lithography and we explore how these parameters play a role in our separation devices. Hollow and solid cylinders are compared with respect to their deforma

A high-throughput deterministic lateral displacement device for rapid and sensitive field-diagnosis of sleeping sickness

We present a simple and rapid microfluidic device capable of extracting and concentrating the parasite causing the fatal disease sleeping sickness (SS) from blood. The device is based on deterministic lateral displacement (DLD) and constructed with a single inlet with flow induced by an ordinary syringe. The simplicity is crucial as the device is intended for use in the resource depraved areas whe

Entropy-based spatial heterogeneity analysis in pathological images for diagnostic applications

Clinical pathological diagnosis and prognosis for cancer is often confounded by spatial tissue heterogeneity. This study investigates the utility of entropy as a robust quantitative metric of spatial disorder within Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) chemical images of breast cancer tissue. The use of entropy is grounded in its capacity to encapsulate the complexities of pixel-wise spectral intensi

Electronical digital instrument (EDI) - Digital music making with children, youth and music teacher students

Making music with digital tools might be considered common knowledge in music education. However, there are vast numbers of music teachers who feel insecure when it comes to actually using it as a prominent tool for music making in their classrooms. The objective of this workshop is to show how students of different ages together with their music teachers create, produce and perform music by EDI.

One pot synthesis of styrene carbonate from carbon dioxide and styrene in water catalyzed by nano-silver modified polyoxometalates

Herein is reported an efficient catalytic system for the direct synthesis of styrene carbonate from styrene and CO2. The preparation and characterization of the catalyst using FTIR, TEM, EDX, XPS, and PXRD is presented. The catalyst comprised of nano-silver modified polyoxometalates (Agx/POM) and n-tetra butyl ammonium bromide (TBAB) was employed in the oxidative carboxylation of styrene with CO2
