The Effect of Emigration on Unemployment in Source Countries: Evidence from the Central and Eastern European EU Member States

This paper empirically examines the effect of emigration on unemployment in the CEE coun-tries of the EU during 2000-2007. It is argued that the enlargement of the EU in 2004 can serve as a natural experiment which helps to prevent the endogeneity of emigration to unem-ployment, since the drastic increase in the East-West migration after the enlargement was mainly driven by political events rather

The Fall and Rise of the Brazilian Cotton Sector An Institutional Analysis of the Recent Success

Brazil has recently become the fifth largest producer and fourth largest exporter of cotton in the world. This success story is exceptional, as the Brazilian cotton production reached record low levels in the mid-1990s. Since then however, production has more than recovered owing to an impressive growth of 43 % during the last decade, which is high in comparison to the world average of 28 %. The p

Numerical Simulation of Combustion and Gasification of Biomass Particles

Popular Abstract in English Most of us are familiar with using plant-derived material such as wood for producing heat for warming the cottages or cooking food when we are camping. Apart from that, plant-derived materials such as trees, forest residues, grasses, agricultural crops, agricultural residues and straw have great potential in producing energy in a larger scale. This group of material is In this thesis, a numerical approach is adopted to study biomass thermochemical conversion. Detailed physical and chemical processes involved in the thermochemical conversion of biomass are considered. The aims are to improve the understanding of the physical and chemical processes involved and to develop and validate mathematical models for numerical simulation of the biomass conversion process.

Underwater sounds

Sonic perspectives on oceanic ecologies Half day seminar by Sound Environment Centre at Lund University & Åsa Stjerna - PhD and Sound Artist, University of Gothenburg   Increased human activity in and around the seas - such as coastal wind turbines, increased maritime transportation, and the exploitation of the Arctic - have over the past decades had a major impact on marine underwater environment

Riverine sources of bioreactive macroelements and their impact on bacterioplankton metabolism in a recipient boreal estuary

The loading of macroelements such as, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), totalnitrogen (N) and total phosphorus (P) from terrestrial soils to aquatic systems isincreasing in the northern hemisphere. This phenomenon has several ecologicaland biogeochemical consequences for inland and coastal water systems, which arelinked to bacterial cycling of DOC, N and P. During growth, bacteria assimilatemacroeleThe loading of terrestrially derived macroelements, such as dissolved organic carbon (DOC), total nitrogen (N), and total phosphorus (P), to inland and estuarine waters is increasing in the northern hemisphere. Malmö Diet Cancer - MDC

In the early 1990s, the Swedish Cancer Foundation initiated a large cohort study with the primary goal of investigating the relationship between diet and subsequent cancer risk. The study was led by Professor of Internal Medicine, Göran Berglund, and Professor of Epidemiology, Lars Janzon. Between 1991 and 1996, in all 17,000 women (born 1923-1950) and 11,000 men (born 1923-1945) were recruited, w

Who can an organization believe in social media? Exploring the process of believability assessment

Data driven decision-making is becoming more and more important for an organization to stay competitive. Data collected and analyzed from social media can teach an organization about its customers in a way that was not possible before. However, in social media there is circulating a lot of data with questionable believability, such as fake news, which risks influencing an organization’s decision-m

The influence by extreme precipitation and temperature on spring barley crop yield in Säby

Global warming and climate change is projected to cause intensified extreme weather events. Food production is threatened by this and crop yields have shown to be negatively affected by extreme weather events. This study examined the correlations between extreme precipitation and temperature and crop yield of spring barley in Säby in Uppsala, Sweden in 1981-2021. Crop yield of spring barley was co

“En integrering utan integration” En kvalitativ studie av policydokument

This study aims to highlight the discursive structures present in Sweden's integration policy document. It focuses on defining the concept of integration and how the subject is constructed in the policy document. The study critically examines how immigrants are constructed in relation to "Swedishness" and identifies which actors are responsible for promoting integration. The research

Regulating Multiple Externalities: The Case of Nordic Fisheries

Open access is a well-known externality problem in fisheries causing excess capacity and overfishing. Due to global warming, externality problems from CO2 emissions have gained increased interest. With two externality problems, a first-best optimum can be achieved by using two regulatory instruments. However, solving the open-access externality problem also affects CO2 emissions. Beräkningar av självantändning i lager av träpellets

The aim of this report is to contribute with information that can be used to improve access to good risk assessments associated with storage of wood pellets. Frank-Kamenetskii theory is described in a manner intended to facilitate for the reader to understand and carry out calculations with the theory. A modeling tool in Microsoft Excel for calculations with Frank-Kamenetskii theory has been devel

Two-Stage Conversion of Land and Marine Biomass for Biogas and Biohydrogen Production

Popular Abstract in English Peter is a part-time cocoa farmer who produces cocoa beans that are used for chocolate production. However, he has always wondered about the efficient utilisation of the residual cocoa pods, which seem to contain sugar as they attract bees. He discussed this with a student studying a biological process whereby organic material can be converted to biogas and a residue thThe replacement of fossil fuels by renewable fuels such as biogas and biohydrogen will require efficient and economically competitive process technologies together with new kinds of biomass. A two-stage system for biogas production has several advantages over the widely used one-stage continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR). However, it has not yet been widely implemented on a large scale. Biohydro

Skäligt brandskydd på hotell- en problemidentifiering

Hotel fires in Sweden are a precarious issue since hotel guests are sleeping in unfamiliar surroundings and that the new legislation in 2004 clarified the owners’ responsibility for the safety of their guests. In 2004, two people were killed in a hotel fire and the owner was subsequently sentenced for unwillingly manslaughter. With an entirely qualitative approach, this analysis investigates how l

Utilization of Wild Fruit in Mozambique – Drying of Vangueria infausta (African medlar)

Popular Abstract in English In Mozambique, many wild fruit species occur naturally in forest environments. Most of the wild fruits are consumed fresh because of their short shelf-life when ripe. Forests play an important role in rural communities as a source of food and medicinal and social/cultural services and also provide a source of income when fruits are sold at local markets. Some parts of MVangueria infausta (African medlar) is a wild fruit found in southern and central Mozambique. The ripe fruit has a leathery skin enclosing three to five seeds embedded in a soft pulp that tastes like apple. It plays an important role in the diet of the rural population and has the potential for commercial use. The fruit is mostly eaten fresh, and sometimes mixed with porridges, but in some parts
