Evidence for Faster X Chromosome Evolution in Spiders

In species with chromosomal sex determination, X chromosomes are predicted to evolve faster than autosomes becauseof positive selection on recessive alleles or weak purifying selection. We investigated X chromosome evolution inStegodyphus spiders that differ in mating system, sex ratio, and population dynamics. We assigned scaffolds to Xchromosomes and autosomes using a novel method based on flow In species with chromosomal sex determination, X chromosomes are predicted to evolve faster than autosomes because of positive selection on recessive alleles or weak purifying selection. Basal body temperature curves and fitting with periodic smoothing splines

Fertility tracking phone apps are widely used by women today, in order to both achieve or prevent conception. Due to the health risks of hormone based contraceptions, many women opt for non-invasive methods, such as fertility tracking. Most of the algorithms for tracking fertility use parameters such as the basal body temperature (BBT), cycle length and days of menstruation. The widely used "

Wild Growth

Urbanization has led to a concerning decline in biodiversity within cities, necessitating innovative approaches and greening efforts. This project, named “Wild Growth” is aimed at combating urban biodiversity loss, and increasing pollinator-friendly areas, through the design and development of a flower seed spreader. Inspired by principles of simplicity, accessibility, and sustainability, the see

Receptor for detection of a Type II sex pheromone in the winter moth Operophtera brumata

Abstract in Undetermined How signal diversity evolves under stabilizing selection in a pheromone-based mate recognition system is a conundrum. Female moths produce two major types of sex pheromones, i.e., long-chain acetates, alcohols and aldehydes (Type I) and polyenic hydrocarbons and epoxides (Type II), along different biosynthetic pathways. Application of ozone in wastewater treatment : Oxidation of pharmaceuticals and filamentous bulking sludge

As pharmaceutical removal was not part of the of the modern wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) design, it is not surprising that WWTPs have been identified as major point sources of pharmaceuticals entering the environment. The oxidation of pharmaceuticals in the WWTP effluent is one of the-end-of-pipe solutions that are considered most ready for full-scale use. However, there are several aspects oAs pharmaceutical removal was not part of the of the modern wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) design, it is not surprising that WWTPs have been identified as major point sources of pharmaceuticals entering the environment. ‘It is completely ok to give up a little sometimes’ : Metaphors and Normality in Swedish Cancer Talk

The clichéd conceptualization of cancer illness as a battle, which the patient can either win or lose, can be problematic. For patients referred to palliative care, it can cause feelings of guilt and failure. This framing of cancer, here referred to as ‘the battle script’, has been questioned in previous research, and there seems to be awareness among health practitioners that battle metaphors sho

Evolution and Differentiation of Large Icy Moons

Purpose: In preparation of several future missions with the objective to research the large icy moons of the Solar System, it is necessary to have a cohesive understanding of the conditions that might lead to the formation of liquid oceans in these moons. The purpose of this work is to create a numerical model for simulating the temperature evolution of the cores of large icy moons. Method: AssumiIn the early 17th century when Galileo Galilei first decided to point a telescope at Jupiter, he noticed four faint objects placed around it on the same line. As he spent more and more nights viewing them he realised that instead of moving in the same direction as Jupiter these four objects in fact orbited the planet itself. This proved that it is possible for another body to be the centre of grav
