Barley is an abundant crop in Europe, which makes its straw residues an interesting cellulose source for ethanol production. Steam pretreatment of the straw followed by enzymatic hydrolysis converts the cellulose to fermentable sugars. Prior to pretreatment the material is impregnated with a catalyst, for example, H2SO4, to enhance enzymatic digestibility of the pretreated straw. Different impregn
PURPOSE: The design concept and the dosimetric characteristics of an applicator system for intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) with special emphasis on alignment methods, the effect of a plastic scatterer in the beam, radiation leakage, and misalignment dosimetry, are presented in this paper. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A soft-docking system for a linear accelerator, which enables collimation of el
Background: Collagenous colitis is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease accompanied mainly by nonbloody diarrhea. The objectives of treatment are to alleviate the symptoms and minimize the deleterious effects on health-related quality of life (HRQOL). There is still no generally accepted clinical definition of remission or relapse. The purpose of this study was to analyze the impact of bowel sympt
Lumican and fibromodulin compete for collagen type I binding in vitro and fibromodulin-deficient mice have four-fold more lumican in tendons. These observations indicate that homologous sequences in lumican and fibromodulin bind to collagen type I. Here, we demonstrate that lumican binding to collagen type I is mediated mainly by Asp-213 in LRR 7. The mutation D213N in lumican impairs interaction
This study investigates utilization of the Internet in the rehabilitation of people on long-term sick leave with chronic pain and/or burnout. Fifty-five people were randomly assigned to two groups: a treatment group (n = 27) that participated in a rehabilitation course over the Internet and a waiting list group (n = 28). The goals were to improve participants' health and increase quality of life,
Objective: Cigarette smoking has been reported as "probable" risk factor for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a poorly understood disease in terms of aetiology. The extensive longitudinal data of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) were used to evaluate age-specific mortality rates from ALS and the role of cigarette smoking on the risk of dying from ALS. Met
This paper outlines how an understanding of the processes of building cognitive and sociopolitical legitimacy is relevant to the formation of a biorefining sector. First we describe a number of theoretical insights into challenges faced by emerging industries and how these can relate to the formation of a biorefining sector. Second, we present the conduct and results of an initial exploration of u
We have earlier shown that galectin-3, a lactose-binding mammalian lectin that is secreted from activated macrophages, basophils, and mast cells, induces activation of the NADPH oxidase in exudated but not in peripheral blood neutrophils (A. Karlsson, P. Follin, H. Leffler, and C. Dahlgren, Blood 91:3430-3438, 1998). The alteration in responsiveness occurring during extravasation correlated with m
We establish the local well-posedness for a new nonlinearly dispersive wave equation which has solutions that exist for indefinite times as well as solutions that blowup in finite time. We also derive an explosion criterion for the equation, and we give a sharp estimate of the existence time for solutions with smooth initial data.
An in-house-made alignment system for deep X-ray lithography is presented that features low costs, low weight and little demand in space. Synchrotron radiation illuminates alignment marks on mask and substrate. The radiation transmitted through these alignment marks is detected by X-ray-sensitive diodes. The mask is fixed to the vacuum chamber, whereas the substrate is mounted on a six-axis kinema
Microdialysis was used for sampling enzyme hydrolysis products of starch hydrolysed with beta -amylase, pullulanase, and/or isoamylase, to obtain information about the molecular structure of starch. Starches from waxy, normal, and high amylose maize, and from normal and genetically modified potato (amylose deficient) were used, and also commercial potato amyloses. The hydrolysis products were anal
The lymphatic system, composed of lymphatic vessels, lymph, lymph nodes, and lymphocytes, is a distinctive vasculature (discontinuous basement membrane, open endothelial junctions, anchoring filaments, valves, and intrinsic contractility), different yet similar to the blood vasculature; an integral component of the plasma-tissue fluid-lymph circulation (the "blood-lymph loop"); and the center of t
We present a novel method for tracking multiple objects in video captured by a non-stationary camera. For low quality video, RANSAC estimation fails when the number of good matches shrinks below the minimum required to estimate the motion model. This paper extends RANSAC in the following ways: (a) Allowing multiple models of different complexity to be chosen at random; (b) Introducing a conditiona
The CCSD(T) method has been used to compute a highly accurate quartic force field and fundamental frequencies for all 16O and 18O isotopomers of the ozonide anion. The CCSD and CASPT2 methods have also been used to verify the reliability of the CCSD(T) fundamental frequencies. The computed fundamental frequencies are in agreement with gas-phase experiments, but disagree with matrix isolation exper
Infection of the stomach by Helicobacter pylori is ubiquitous among humans. However, although H. pylori strains from different geographic areas are associated with clear phylogeographic differentiation(1-4), the age of an association between these bacteria with humans remains highly controversial(5,6). Here we show, using sequences from a large data set of bacterial strains that, as in humans, gen
