Oesophageal Resection with Gastric Tube Reconstruction - A clinical study of a surgical method and its consequences on the upper gastrointestinal tract and survival

Det anatomiska läget gör att man ur kirurgisk synpunkt oftast måste avlägsna matstrupen via en kombination av inciIn a prospective randomised study following oesophagectomy and gastric tube reconstruction patients with hand-sutured neck anastomoses were compared with patients with circular stapled chest anastomoses. The two groups had equal rates of anastomotic or conduit leaks of 7.3 % (3/41) and 7.1 % (3/42) and of benign anastomotic strictures of 19.5 % (8/41) and 28.6 % (12/42). Another prospective random

Short and Long-Term Controls on Active Layer and Permafrost Carbon Turnover Across the Arctic

Decomposition of soil organic matter (SOM) in permafrost terrain and the production of greenhouse gases is a key factor for understanding climate change-carbon feedbacks. Previous studies have shown that SOM decomposition is mostly controlled by soil temperature, soil moisture, and carbon-nitrogen ratio (C:N). However, focus has generally been on site-specific processes and little is known about v

Simultaneous assimilation of remotely sensed soil moisture and FAPAR for improving terrestrial carbon fluxes at multiple sites using CCDAS

The carbon cycle of the terrestrial biosphere plays a vital role in controlling the global carbon balance and, consequently, climate change. Reliably modeled CO2 fluxes between the terrestrial biosphere and the atmosphere are necessary in projections of policy strategies aiming at constraining carbon emissions and of future climate change. In this study, SMOS (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity) L3

Nanowire growth and dopants studied by cross-sectional scanning tunnelling microscopy

Using a crystalline embedding scheme it has recently become possible to study free-standing III - V nanowires with cross-sectional scanning tunnelling microscopy (XSTM). In the present paper we discuss how this novel method can be used for direct atomically resolved imaging of the interior of nanowires. We will focus in particular on two areas where this method provides unique possibilities. First

Preparation of protein imprinted polymer beads by Pickering emulsion polymerization

We present a new method for preparation of protein-specific polymer beads based on surface molecular imprinting in Pickering emulsion. In the first step, adult human hemoglobin (Hb) was adsorbed on silica nanoparticles. The protein-coated silica particles were then used to stabilize an oil-in-water emulsion (Pickering emulsion) composed of cross-linking monomer in the oil phase. After free radical

Crystal structure of a copper-transporting PIB-type ATPase

Heavy-metal homeostasis and detoxification is crucial for cell viability. P-type ATPases of the class IB (PIB) are essential in these processes, actively extruding heavy metals from the cytoplasm of cells. Here we present the structure of a PIB-ATPase, a Legionella pneumophila CopA Cu(+)-ATPase, in a copper-free form, as determined by X-ray crystallography at 3.2 Å resolution. The structure indica

Regional Integration and Vertical specialization - a study of the telecommunications equipment industry in Southeast Asia

This paper examines the trade and specialization effects of China’s regional integration with South East Asia. Production fragmentation enables a firm or country to specialize in upstream, midstream or downstream activities rather than the whole production chain. A decrease in tariffs and other service link costs justify outsourcing or re-locating production to the country with best location a

Molecular recognition and dynamics in proteins studied by NMR

Knowledge of dynamics in protein is very important in the description of protein function and molecular recognition. The thesis investigates protein dynamics on time-scales from milli- to sub-nanosecond, with focus on the latter, using NMR spin relaxation experiments on two proteins, the 138-residue carbohydrate recognition domain of galectin-3 (Gal3C) and the 56-residue B1 domain of bacterial pro

Binding affinities of the farnesoid X receptor in the D3R Grand Challenge 2 estimated by free-energy perturbation and docking

We have studied the binding of 102 ligands to the farnesoid X receptor within the D3R Grand Challenge 2016 blind-prediction competition. First, we employed docking with five different docking software and scoring functions. The selected docked poses gave an average root-mean-squared deviation of 4.2 Å. Consensus scoring gave decent results with a Kendall’s τ of 0.26 ± 0.06 and a Spearman’s ρ of 0.

Shoda’s reagent: A way to make sugar chemistry without protection groups

Kolhydrater är byggstenar till en rad olika bio-moleProtecting groups, or PGs, are important in synthetic organic chemistry. However, protective group free chemistry, i.e. to manage reactions without the use of traditional PGs, has recently caught the attention for the entire field of chemistry. When working with sugar molecules, it is important to know that the molecule contain several hydroxyl groups. It is thus essential to make sure the sugar

Widespread Pesticide Distribution in the European Atmosphere Questions their Degradability in Air

Risk assessment of pesticide impacts on remote ecosystems makes use of model-estimated degradation in air. Recent studies suggest these degradation rates to be overestimated, questioning current pesticide regulation. Here, we investigated the concentrations of 76 pesticides in Europe at 29 rural, coastal, mountain, and polar sites during the agricultural application season. Overall, 58 pesticides

Equilibrium sampling through membranes (ESTM) of acidic organic pollutants using hollow fibre modules in continuous steady-state mode.

Hollow fibre (HF) membrane modules were applied in continuous mode for equilibrium sampling through membranes (ESTM) of polar organic pollutants. Phenolic compounds (chlorophenols, cresols and phenol) served as model substances and ESTM was tuned towards the measurement of freely dissolved concentrations (C(free)). HF membrane modules were constructed using thin-walled membrane, 1-m module length
