Climate research

We conduct advanced research on the climate – exploring what affects it, historical patterns, biosphere-atmosphere interactions, and what we can expect in the future with a changing climate. The effects of climate change are already becoming apparent: average global temperatures are rising, ice is melting, and sea levels are rising. All aspects of life are being affected. Conditions for people and

This paper analyses how the Swedish data protection regulation aligns with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), with a particular focus on the exemption for journalistic purposes as outlined in Article 85 GDPR. The legal framework is described through a presentation of various legal sources, including the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR)

ESR Essentials : diffusion-weighted MRI—practice recommendations by the European Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and Biology

Abstract: Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) offers critical insights into tissue microstructure through the assessment of water molecule random displacements and plays a central role in the assessment of neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases. To successfully implement and use DWI in clinical practice, guidelines for acquisition, interpretation of image contrast and of artefacts should be followed,

The Silicon Cycle in the Ocean

The element silicon is everywhere! In fact, silicon is the second most abundant element in Earth’s crust. Silicon in rocks and minerals breaks down and is transported from rivers and streams into the world’s oceans. Many marine organisms need silicon as it is a crucial nutrient to build their skeletons. Silicon eventually reaches the seafloor, but its journey into the abyss is not straightforward

Idag används ett flertal programvaror för att dimensionera geokonstWhenever a new building is to be constructed it is important to check the geological preconditions of the underlaying soil. To ensure the requirement on the functionality of the new structure it is therefore of importance to investigate the potential geotechnical problems that may occur and to prevent these from occuring. Today, many different software are used for different geotechnial design. Th

Mixed Embeddedness: Ethnic entrepreneurship in Malmö, Sweden

Entrepreneurship among immigrants is an old phenomenon that is caused by migration processes. It is receiving special attention due to the fact that its potential in contribution to countries‟ economies is huge. In European context it is a reason and a cause of international mobility, immigrant policies, integration issues and diversified society composition. Studying of immigrant entrepreneurship

The Legacy of Three Conflicts in Zimbabwe-Traumas and missed opportunities

The study analyses three major conflicts in Zimbabwe during the past forty years through a filter of theoretical models. The study relies on secondary material in the form of articles, books and research reports. The causes of the conflicts, the traumas developed through the conflicts and reconciliation efforts at the end of the conflicts are analyzed. It shows that Zimbabwe is a traumatized natio

Restrictions to the free movement of goods. The protection of the environment as a mandatory requirement in the ECJ case law

Since the 'Danish bottles case', where the protection of the environment was recognized as a mandatory requirement that could derogate from the free movement of goods, the ECJ has taken over an interesting role to map the boundaries of its application. The rank of Community policy and the need of integration explicitly envisaged in the EC, have had a major influence in its judicial interpr

Timing of the deglaciation in southern Patagonia: Testing the applicability of K-Feldspar IRSL

The timing of the ice margin retreat of the Late Glacial Patagonian Ice Sheet (PIS) in southern Patagonia has been the object of discussion for many years. In order to resolve questions about the complex response of the PIS to past climate change, any geological interpretation and data modelling need evaluation against an absolute chronology. The aim of this project is to investigate the applicabi

In situ reduction study of cobalt model Fischer-Tropsch synthesis catalysts

Fischer-Tropsch (FT) synthesis is an important process to manufacture hydrocarbons and oxygenated hydrocarbons from mixtures of carbon monoxide and hydrogen (syngas). The catalysis process occurs on, for example, cobalt metal surfaces at elevated temperatures and pressures. A fundamental understanding of the reduction pathway of supported cobalt oxides, and the intermediate species present during

A voltage-translinear based CMOS signal component separator chip for linear LINC transmitters

The LINC transmitter is an architecture that provides linear amplification using nonlinear but power efficient amplifiers. One crucial signal processing function of LINC is the signal component separator (SCS) which forms two constant-amplitude phase-modulated signals from the source signal. This paper presents an analog SCS chip implemented in a 0.35 mum CMOS process using a novel design based on

Tuned iterated filtering

Iterated filtering is an algorithm for estimating parameters in partially observed Markov process (POMP) models. The real-world performance of the algorithm depends on several tuning parameters. We propose a simple method for optimizing the parameter governing the joint dynamics of the hidden parameter process (called the Sigma matrix). The tuning is implemented using a fixed-lag sequential Monte

A mid-ranging control strategy for non-stationary processes and its application to dissolved oxygen control in a bioprocess

In this study a modified mid-ranging strategy is proposed where the controller for the secondary manipulated variable uses its own output as its setpoint, possibly with an offset and/or re-scaling. This modification allows the manipulated variables to increase in unison so that the mid-ranging advantage of utilizing the fast dynamics of the primary controller to regulate the process can be achieve

The SystemJ approach to system-level design

In this paper, we propose a new system-level design language, called SystemJ. It extends Java with synchronous reactive features present in Esterel and asynchronous constructs suitable for modelling globally asynchronous locally synchronous systems. The strength of SystemJ comes from its ability to offer the data processing and encapsulation elegance of Java, Esterel-like reactivity and synchrony,

Mobility-dependent effects on species richness in fragmented landscapes

In fragmented landscapes, mobility is an important trait for population persistence but the predictions on the relationship between habitat fragmentation and extinction risk are contradictory. Here, we test the effects of the two main aspects of fragmentation, patch area and isolation, on the species richness of groups of butterflies associated with semi-natural grasslands, differing in mobility.

Mechanisms responsible for sub-micron particle deposition in a laminar wall jet

An experimental study was performed to investigate the dependency of particle size on the deposition rate. Polystyrene latex particles of two radii (0.23 and 0.38 mum) were deposited onto a glass surface covered with indium-tin oxide. Reduced deposition efficiency was observed for the larger particles, although an increase in the deposition efficiency was seen as that the diffusion boundary layer
