Studien utgår från fem teman: tankar kring kategorisering som fenomen, dominerandThe aim of this study is to understand how staff reason about the categorization that follows due to the integration work with newly arrived youth in school. The study is based on six qualitative semi- structured interviews with employees with different professions who all work with newly arrived youths in school. The study includes five themes: thoughts about the nature of categorization, recurre

För att nå målet med studiThe purpose of this thesis is to examine the collection of periodicals and newspapers in three reading societies in Karlskrona (1794-1863), Åbo (1798-1823) and Lund (1812-1831), as well as to examine why reading societies disappeared. The development and process of these type of Swedish reading societies describes and with the textsociological theory the result of the analysis shows that contempor

In Sweden approximately ten percent of all children grows up in a family where at least one parent is having an alcohol related addiction. Since 1998 the development of group activities for children in this situation has been immense. The aim of group activities is to break the child's isolation and make them feel that they are not lonely in their experiences, give them knowledge about addicti

The main purpose of this essay was to find out how members of Narcotics Anonymous and professionals within the socila service departments define integration of drug addicts, and ascertain how they experience their parts in the integration process. We have wanted to examine which factors that are essential for the earlier drogabuser in his rehabilitation to the ordinary world. We wanted to find ou

NGO Influence on Forest Legislation: Experiences from Federal Forest Management in the United States

In the last two decades, a concern on how federal forests in the United States are managed has provoked concerns among different stakeholders, including NGOs. The purpose of this thesis is to contribute to the understanding of NGO influence on forest management legislation. Eight aspects were selected and compared in different study cases referring to legislative proposals dealing with forest man

Fusing of Security and the Environment: New Euro-Platitude or Latitude?

This thesis critically examines the social construction of 'environmental security' in the EU policy making. The main purpose of th thesis is to answer the central question of how the process of fusing security and environmental concerns in the EU's policy-making can be explained; and what are the effects of it. In an attempt to provide some insights into the range and functions of thi

NMD is essential for hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells and for eliminating by-products of programmed DNA rearrangements

Nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD) is a post-transcriptional surveillance process that eliminates mRNAs containing premature termination codons (PTCs). NMD has been hypothesized to impact on several aspects of cellular function; however, its importance in the context of a mammalian organism has not been addressed in detail. Here we use mouse genetics to demonstrate that hematopoietic-specific dele

Bioethanol production from non-starch carbohydrate residues in process streams from a dry-mill ethanol plant.

Slurries obtained from process streams in a starch-to-ethanol plant, Agroetanol AB in Norrköping, Sweden, were used to assess the potential increase in bioethanol yield if heat treatment followed by enzymatic hydrolysis were applied to the residual starch-free cellulose and hemicellulose fractions. The effects of different pretreatment conditions on flour (the raw material), the stream after sacch

Depth-profiling the composition of bimetallic nanoparticles using medium energy ion scattering

The near monolayer depth resolution of medium energy ion scattering is utilized to develop a probe of the depth dependent composition of bimetallic nanoparticles supported on planar oxide supports. The approach fits spectra of scattered ion intensity versus ion energy at well-defined scattering angles taking into account the asymmetric line shape in such spectra and also the depth dependent loss p

Bioconversion of industrial hemp to ethanol and methane: The benefits of steam pretreatment and co-production

Several scenarios for ethanol production, methane production (by anaerobic digestion) and co-production of these, using autumn harvested hemp as substrate, were investigated and compared in terms of gross energy output. Steam pretreatment improved the methane production rate compared with mechanical grinding. The methane yield of steam pretreated stems was similar both with and without pre-hydroly

Risk definieras iThis thesis examines to what extent the comprehensive municipal risk and vulnerability analysis work as a basis for decision-making concerning risk and vulnerability reducing measures in eight Swedish municipalities. An additional objective is to identify mechanisms influencing the decision-making process regarding such measures. In order to meet these objectives an interview study was conducted i

Puzzling with childcare arrangements - A study of how single mothers in Sweden working non-standard hours manage their childcare

This thesis deals with the life-puzzle from the context of single mothers working non-standard hours within the health and social care sector. There is a specific focus on this group’s childcare-arrangements with the idea of their puzzles being more complex than many others in this regard. The aim of this study is to see what resources these women have available for managing their puzzles, as well

Amorphous silica mobilization by inter-rill erosion: insights from rainfall experiments

Amorphous silica (ASi) carried in suspension by rivers is an important component in the global Si budget. Water erosion processes in cultivated catchments are likely to drive ASi delivery to the river system. However, no studies have investigated the controls on ASi mobilization by erosional processes in croplands. Rainfall experiments were performed on split fields (i.e. a part conventionally plo

Nutrient constraints on metabolism affect the temperature regulation of aquatic bacterial growth efficiency

Inorganic nutrient availability and temperature are recognized as major regulators of organic carbon processing by aquatic bacteria, but little is known about how these two factors interact to control bacterial metabolic processes. We manipulated the temperature of boreal humic stream water samples within 0-25 degrees C and measured bacterial production (BP) and respiration (BR) with and without i

Popular Abstract in English Background Palliative care is an approach characterized by a holistic view of the person, which supports the individual for living with dignity and with the best possible level of wellbeing until the end of life. Earlier studies have shown that older people do not have the same access to palliative care as younger people do. One reason for this could be that it is diffiThe aim of this thesis was to study nurse assistants’ experience of palliative care and to investigate how an intervention with a focus on a palliative care approach in residential care facilities influenced the nurse assistants and their work situation. The thesis is based on two qualitative and two quantitative studies, focusing on nurse assistants working at residential care facilities for olde

Results and lessons learned from the ESReDA's Accident Investigation Working Group Introducing article to "Safety Science" special issue on "Industrial Events Investigation"

The European Safety Reliability and Data Association (ESReDA) established in year 2000, a Working Group on Accident Investigation (WGAI) that ended in the year 2008. With the objective of improving the quality of accident investigation and as a consequence the learning from experience process and the safety performance, the working group tasked itself at two levels: the first one, at a societal, i

Giving language a hand: gesture as a cue based communicative strategy *

All accounts of communicative behaviour in general, and communicative strategies in particular, mention gesture1 in relation to language acquisition (cf. Faerch & Kasper 1983 for an overview). However, few attempts have been made to investigate how spoken language and spontaneous gesture combine to determine discourse referents. Referential gesture and referential discourse will be of particul

Effect of flow reversal on the shear induced formation of multilamellar vesicles

The influence of rate controlled flow reversal on the transition from planar lamellae to multilamellar vesicles (MLV) using a nonionic lamellar phase consisting of 40 wt % triethylene glycol monodecyl ether (C10E3 in D2O) is investigated by means of time-resolved rheo-small-angle light and neutron scattering (SALS, SANS). Flow reversal provides the possibility to control the kinetics of the transi
