Dynamic MRI of Fluid and Solute Transportation across the Arachnoid Barrier in the Human Meninges

Background The dura mater has a permeable vasculature similar to that of peripheral organs, and is separated from the brain, which is enclosed within the arachnoid barrier. Fluid and solute transport across the arachnoid barrier between the subarachnoid space (SAS) and dura is crucial for brain waste clearance and immune surveillance, but few neuroimaging approaches can capture this dynamic proces

Det var inget hotell de hamnade på : ungas upplevelser av psykiatrisk tvångsvård

The purpose of this study was to examine young people’s experiences of compulsory institutional care in psychiatric clinics. The study was conducted by a qualitative content analysis in which I studied six different blogs on the internet that were selected through a non-random selection. The analysis is based on symbolic interactionism, Goffman´s theory about total institutions and the powerconcep

Reactions catalyzed by peg-modified αchymotrypsin in organic solvents. Influence of water content and degree of modification

αChymotrypsin was modified with cyanuric chloride activated monomethoxypolyethylene glycol (MPEG) with molecular weights 1900 and 5000. Using the higher molecular weight MPEG a product that was soluble in benzene at moderate levels of modification was obtained, whereas with MPEG 1900 almost all the enzyme's amino groups had to be modified for dissolving the conjugate. The catalytic activity decrea

Rain-flow fatigue damage for transformed Gaussian loads

Fatigue damage due to a special class of non-Gaussian broadband loadings is considered. Specifically, the loadings are considered to be non-monotonic transformation of stationary, Gaussian random processes. A linear damage accumulation rule is assumed and the rain-flow cycle counting method is considered. Analytical expressions are developed for estimating the expected rain-flow fatigue damage. Ea

Measuring language development in bilingual children: Swedish- Arabic children with and without language impairment

Data from ten Swedish-Arabic preschool children with language impairment and ten Swedish-Arabic children with normal language development matched for age and exposure to Swedish were analyzed. Specific tasks for both Swedish and Arabic were designed. By using the hierarchy predicted by processability theory as a yardstick, grammatical development was measured in the two languages of the children.

QSim, a program for NMR simulations

We present QSim, a program for simulation of NMR experiments. Pulse sequences are implemented and analyzed in QSim using a mouse driven interface. QSim can handle almost any modern NMR experiment, using multiple channels, shaped pulses, mixing, decoupling, phase-cycling and pulsed field gradients. Any number of spins with any spin quantum number can, in theory, be used in simulations. Relaxation i

Kinetics and equilibria for complex formation between palladium(II) and chloroacetate

Kinetics and equilibria for the formation of a 1:1 complex between palladium(II) and chloroacetate were studied by spectrophotometric measurements in 1.00 mol . dm(-3) HClO4 at 298.2 K. The equilibrium constant, K, of the reaction Pd2+ + HL reversible arrow PdL+ + H+ was determined from multi-wavelength absorbance measurements of equilibrated solutions at variable temperatures as log(10)K (298.2K)

Endogenous processes of Colonial Settlement : The success and failure of European settler farming in sub-Saharan Africa*

This paper comments on studies that aim to quantify the long-term economic effects of historical European settlement across the globe. We argue for the need to properly conceptualise «colonial settlement» as an endogenous development process shaped by the interaction between prospective settlers and indigenous peoples. We conduct three comparative case studies in West, East and Southern Africa, sh

Hydrological response of sedum-moss roof

Eco-roofs are becoming popular for aesthetic reasons and also as units of stormwater systems. It is thought that such roofs with soil cover and vegetation reduces the total runoff, the peak flows and improves the quality of the roof water. Here are reported investigations of runoff from thin, 3-4 cm soil, extensive green roofs with sedum-moss in southern Sweden. The two-year study was performed on

The discovery and mass measurement of a new ultra-short-period Planet : K2-131b

We report the discovery of a new ultra-short-period planet and summarize the properties of all such planets for which the mass and radius have been measured. The new planet, K2-131b, was discovered in K2 Campaign 10. It has a radius of and orbits a G dwarf with a period of 8.9 hr. Radial velocities obtained with Magellan/PFS and TNG/HARPS-N show evidence for stellar activity along with orbital mot

The relation between structure-performance of thin film composite membranes and the tools used for their fabrication method

For more than 30 years polyimides (PA) have been one of the main polymers for the fabrication of thin film composite membranes. Several researchers have assessed the main fabrication variables that influence the final structure of the polyamide layers including monomer concentration, solvents, additives in aqueous and organic phases and type of support to mention few [1,2]. However, few studies ha

BEHAVIOURAL IMPLICATIONS OF EMPLOYEE-DRIVEN INNOVATION — A CRITICAL DISCOURSE ANALYSIS

This paper examines a digital employee-oriented innovation program at a global IT-firm. It addresses the research question: how is the generation and promotion of employee ideas organised by the management, and what are the behavioural implications in terms of participation of such an organising? Drawing on the literature on inclusive innovation and employee-driven innovation, the authors explore

Efficient Processing and Storage for Massive MIMO Digital Baseband

Driven by the increasing demands on data rate from applications, the wireless communication standard has for decades been evolving approximately at a pace of one generation per ten years. Following this trend, the ambitious plan to replace the current cellular mobile network standard (4G) with the next generation standard (5G) is going through the standardization phase and is getting close to its

Comprehensive proteome analysis of nasal lavage samples after controlled exposure to welding nanoparticles shows an induced acute phase and a nuclear receptor, LXR/RXR, activation that influence the status of the extracellular matrix

Background: Epidemiological studies have shown that many welders experience respiratory symptoms. During the welding process a large number of airborne nanosized particles are generated, which might be inhaled and deposited in the respiratory tract. Knowledge of the underlying mechanisms behind observed symptoms is still partly lacking, although inflammation is suggested to play a central role. Th

Definition of sensitive skin : An expert position paper from the special interest group on sensitive skin of the international forum for the study of itch

Sensitive skin is a frequent complaint in the general population, in patients, and among subjects suffering from itch. The International Forum for the Study of Itch (IFSI) decided to initiate a special interest group (SIG) on sensitive skin. Using the Delphi method, sensitive skin was defined as “A syndrome defined by the occurrence of unpleasant sensations (stinging, burning, pain, pruritus, and

Feedforward Control Concepts through Interactive Tools

This paper presents an interactive software tool for basic and advanced concepts of feedforward control. The ideal compensator is analyzed to show how the effects of the load disturbances are eliminated from the process output. Furthermore, it is also shown that the ideal compensator is seldom realizable, since the compensator may be non-causal, it may be unstable, it may have infinite high-freque

Insight into particle production mechanisms via angular correlations of identified particles in pp collisions at √s=7 TeV

Two-particle angular correlations were measured in pp collisions at s=7 TeV for pions, kaons, protons, and lambdas, for all particle/anti-particle combinations in the pair. Data for mesons exhibit an expected peak dominated by effects associated with mini-jets and are well reproduced by general purpose Monte Carlo generators. However, for baryon–baryon and anti-baryon–anti-baryon pairs, where both

WNT5A signaling and MARCKS phosphorylation in melanoma cell migration and invasion

The positive correlation between elevated expression of wingless-type mammary tumor virus integration site family member 5A (WNT5A) and metastatic potential in melanoma has been extensively explored. However, detailed mechanistic aspects regarding how WNT5A promotes increased melanoma aggressiveness remains unknown. Myristoylated alanine-rich C-kinase substrate (MARCKS), an intracellular protein c
