A note on EFSA’s ongoing efforts to increase transparency of uncertainty in scientific opinions

This is a comment on Lofstedt and Bouder?s paper, which explores the prospects of evidence based uncertainty analysis in Europe, focusing on the ongoing development on uncertainty analysis at the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). Fishing

Fish played a vital role in the development of the European Mesolithic; from their colonization of the continent during the Upper Palaeolithic to ongoing debates regarding their importance across the Neolithic transition, they are central to many discussions. Here, we focus on the European Mesolithic zooarchaeological fish dataset, in which we have collated >640,000 identified fish remains from 35

The Emotional Interaction of Judicial Objectivity

Like other Western legal systems, the Swedish legal system constructs objectivity as an unemotional state of being. We argue that the enactment of objectivity in situ relies on objectivity work including emotion management and empathy. Building on qualitative interviews and observations in Swedish district courts, we analyse courtroom interaction through a dramaturgical lens, highlighting tacit siLike other Western legal systems, the Swedish legal system constructs objectivity as an unemotional state of being. Satellite canopy water content from Sentinel-2, Landsat-8 and MODIS: Principle, algorithm and assessment

In spite of the efforts made for canopy water content (CWC) mapping in the community, including vegetation water proxy from microwave-based vegetation optical depth (VOD) as well as optical-based indices, there is still no operational CWC product from optical satellites up to now. Prosociality predicts health behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic

Socially responsible behavior is crucial for slowing the spread of infectious diseases. However, economic and epidemiological models of disease transmission abstract from prosocial motivations as a driver of behaviors that impact the health of others. In an incentivized study, we show that a large majority of people are very reluctant to put others at risk for their personal benefit. Moreover, thi

A Naturalistic Perspective on Knowledge How : Grasping Truths in a Practical Way

For quite some time, cognitive science has offered philosophy an opportunity to address central problems with an arsenal of relevant theories and empirical data. However, even among those naturalistically inclined, it has been hard to find a universally accepted way to do so. In this article, we offer a case study of how cognitive-science input can elucidate an epistemological issue that has cause

Genetic correlations and their dependence on environmental similarity : insights from livestock data

Genetic correlations for a trait across environments are predicted to decrease as environments diverge. However, estimates of genetic correlations from natural populations are typically defined across a limited environmental range and prone to very large standard errors, making it difficult to test this prediction. We address the importance of environmental distance on genetic correlations by empl
