Women's experiences of hassles and uplifts in their everyday patterns of occupations

The aim of this study was to investigate experiences of hassles and uplifts among women. One hundred working mothers were interviewed using the Target Complaints instrument. Content analysis, resulting in both qualitative categories and quantitative variables, was used. Working mothers' hassles were mainly generated by their social, temporal and doing contexts and illustrate the importance of cons

The ward atmosphere of a psychiatric day care unit on the basis of occupational therapy: Characteristics and development during a 5-year period

As part of a process-outcome study the development of the ward atmosphere over 5 years in a psychiatric day care unit on the basis of occupational therapy was investigated. The Community Oriented Programs Environment Scale (COPES) was administered to patients -about equal numbers of psychotic and non-psychotic—and staff on ten occasions, covering three phases. The ward atmosphere was distinguished

Äldre i arbetslivet

Technical expertise, sustainability, and the politics of knowledge

The dominant role of technology in contemporary societies requires the public to rely on individuals with specialized knowledge to invent, design, manufacture and maintain increasingly complex artifacts and networks. As Stilgoe et al. (2006: 16) note, “Our everyday lives are played out through a series of technological and expert relationships.” In spite of the increasing reliance on technologies

State led agricultural development and change in Yogyakarta 1973-1996

In the early 1990s, Indonesia was seen as one of the post war success stories. The country was boasting an impressive growth record and had seen the number of poor continuously decline. This picture of Indonesia stood in stark contrast to the situation only 30 years earlier when the economy was in a shambles and starvation was a real threat. At the core of this change in Indonesia lies the transfo

Satisfaction with Daily Occupations: a tool for client evaluation in mental health care

Research findings suggest that in order to clarify the relationship between occupation and health, occupation needs to be framed in several different ways. One facet of occupation is satisfaction with daily occupations, assessed using the Satisfaction with Daily Occupations (SDO) instrument. The purpose was to investigate some of the SDO's psychometric properties when applied on people with persis

Time to reevaluate the machine society: Post-industrial ethics from an occupational perspective

This paper discusses the ethics underlying the occupational repertoire of the post-industrial citizen, giving attention to lifestyle phenomena such as increased tempo and quantity of occupations; manipulation of time, organisms and environments; decreases in sleep, rest and play etc. In trying to understand human behavior in the 21st century, an ethical perspective is delineated and some starting

The Housing Enabler: An objective tool for assessing accessibility.

This paper describes an instrument - the Housing Enabler - used in the assessment of housing accessibility. The tool was developed from the original Enabler idea by Steinfeld et al (1979), resulting in an instrument for reliable assessment of the accessibility of the housing environment and the immediate outdoor environment in terms of occupational therapy. Apart from a description of the instrume

Towards best practice recommendations for turbulence modelling of high-pressure homogenizer outlet chambers – Numerical validation using DNS data

There is a large interest in predicting high-pressure homogenizer (HPH) valve hydrodynamics using CFD, in academic research and industrial R&D. Most of these studies still use two-equation RANS turbulence models, whereas only a few have used LES formulations. From a theoretical perspective, LES is known to be more accurate than RANS, especially in terms of estimating the dissipation rate of tu

Where to restore – an approach to spatial prioritization of connectivity forests for forest landscape restoration

With two centuries of forestry, natural forests in boreal Sweden are rare and strongly fragmented. Hence, restoration aiming to improve conditions for forest biodiversity is needed. However, to ensure landscape connectivity – where to restore is a critical concern. Our study objective was to identify connectivity forest that through restoration support connectivity and biodiversity. The study area

Agents of change or status quo? : The survival and development of labor NGOs in South China

This article explores the dynamics of state control and specific workings of state power by ethnographically examining the ways in which Chinese grassroots labor NGOs negotiate and gauge the unclear parameters permitted by the Chinese state in South China. By closely examining the everyday activism at the margins of the Chinese state, I argue that the uncertainty about the limits of the state’s to

How are biodiversity and dispersal of species affected by the management of roadsides? A systematic map protocol

Background: In many parts of the world, roadsides are regularly managed for traffic-safety reasons. Hence, there are similarities between roadsides and certain other managed habitats, such as wooded pastures and mown or grazed grasslands. In contrast to roadsides, the latter habitats have declined rapidly in Europe during the last century, and today only a fraction of their former extent remains.

Institutional Complexity and Political Agency in Polycentric Governance

This chapter addresses the ways in which the complexity of global governance enables or constrains political agency. An increasingly complex global institutional system—with its growing level of unpredictability and uncertainties—challenges some of the classical institutionalist tenets in respect of conditions of power and agency. For instance, the capacities of central governance institutions and

Boundary dimensions of social innovation : negotiating conflicts and compatibilities when developing a national agenda

In order to add to the existing knowledge on the complex institutional dynamics of negotiating conflicts and compatibilities in innovation processes that address societal challenges and social needs, this article scrutinizes the scientific and societal debate on the theoretical and practical application of “social innovation” by means of the concept “boundary object” linked to institutional theoryIn order to add to the existing knowledge on the complex institutional dynamics of negotiating conflicts and compatibilities in innovation processes that address societal challenges and social needs, this article scrutinizes the scientific and societal debate on the theoretical and practical application of “social innovation” by means of the concept “boundary object” linked to institutional theory

Allergy to methyltetrahydrophthalic anhydride in epoxy resin workers

One hundred and forty four current and 26 former workers in a plant producing barrels for rocket guns from an epoxy resin containing methyltetrahydrophthalic anhydride (MTHPA; time weighted average air concentration up to 150 uglm') were studied. They showed higher frequencies of work related symptoms from the eyes (31 v 0%; p < 0-001), nose (53 v 9%; p < 0-001), pharynx (26 v 6%; p < 0-01), and a
