Direct switch from levodopa/benserazide or levodopa/carbidopa to levodopa/carbidopa/entacapone in Parkinson's disease patients with wearing-off : efficacy, safety and feasibility--an open-label, 6-week study

The study objective was to assess the efficacy, safety and feasibility of switching from levodopa/benserazide (LB) or levodopa/carbidopa (LC) to levodopa/carbidopa/entacapone (LCE) in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients with wearing-off. This was a multicenter, open-label, 6-week study; the primary outcome was success rate based on the patient-assessed Clinical Global Impression of Change (P-CGI-C).

The effects of daily meteorological perturbation on pregnancy outcome : follow-up of a cohort of young women undergoing IVF treatment

Background: Human reproduction follows a seasonal pattern with respect to spontaneous conception, a phenomenon wherein the effect of meteorological fluctuations might not be unique. However, the effect of seasonal variations on patients who underwent in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment is unclear. We aimed to evaluate the effects of meteorological variation on the pregnancy rate in a cohort und

Global Effect of Modifiable Risk Factors on Cardiovascular Disease and Mortality.

Background Five modifiable risk factors are associated with cardiovascular disease and death from any cause. Studies using individual-level data to evaluate the regional and sex-specific prevalence of the risk factors and their effect on these outcomes are lacking. Methods We pooled and harmonized individual-level data from 112 cohort studies conducted in 34 countries and 8 geographic regions part

Genomic alterations in ovarian endometriosis and subsequently diagnosed ovarian carcinoma

STUDY QUESTION: Can the alleged association between ovarian endometriosis and ovarian carcinoma be substantiated by genetic analysis of endometriosis diagnosed prior to the onset of the carcinoma?SUMMARY ANSWER: The data suggest that ovarian carcinoma does not originate from ovarian endometriosis with a cancer-like genetic profile; however, a common precursor is probable.WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: End

Human pancreatic islet miRNA-mRNA networks of altered miRNAs due to glycemic status

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expression via mRNA targeting, playing important roles in the pancreatic islets. We aimed to identify molecular pathways and genomic regulatory regions associated with altered miRNA expression due to glycemic status, which could contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes (T2D). To this end, miRNAs were identified by a combinatio

Linear spectral mixture modelling of arctic vegetation using ground spectroradiometry

An experimental linear mixture modelling using ground spectroradiometric measurements in the Kola Peninsula, Russia has been carried out to create a basis for mapping vegetation and non-vegetation components in the tundra-taiga ecotone using satellite imagery. We concentrated on the ground level experiment with the goal to use it further for the classification of multispectral satellite imagery th

Optimal microphone selection for aero-engine acoustic measurement

Acoustic testing is crucial in the aero-engine design process, providing valuable information about the sound field in terms of acoustic modes. The conventional use of a uniform sampling array limits the achievable resolution for a given number of sensors, necessitating the use of a large number of sensors to achieve high-resolution estimates. This limitation may be overcome using a non-uniform se

Spatial lung imaging in clinical and translational settings

For many severe lung diseases, non-invasive biomarkers from imaging could improve early detection of lung injury or disease onset, establish a diagnosis, or help follow-up disease progression and treatment strategies. Imaging of the thorax and lung is challenging due to its size, respiration movement, transferred cardiac pulsation, vast density range and gravitation sensitivity. However, there is

Building a Distributed Computing System for LDMX : Challenges of creating and operating a lightweight e-infrastructure for small-to-medium size accelerator experiments

Particle physics experiments rely extensively on computing and data services, making e-infrastructure an integral part of the research collaboration. Constructing and operating distributed computing can however be challenging for a smaller-scale collaboration. The Light Dark Matter eXperiment (LDMX) is a planned small-scale accelerator-based experiment to search for dark matter in the sub-GeV mass

Atmospheric oxygen as a tracer for fossil fuel carbon dioxide : a sensitivity study in the UK

We investigate the use of atmospheric oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) measurements for the estimation of the fossil fuel component of atmospheric CO2 in the UK. Atmospheric potential oxygen (APO) - a tracer that combines O2 and CO2, minimizing the influence of terrestrial biosphere fluxes - is simulated at three sites in the UK, two of which make APO measurements. We present a set of model ex

A Qualitative Study on Barriers to COVID-19 Vaccine Uptake among Community Members in Tanzania

The use of vaccines is one of the key tools in reversing the COVID-19 pandemic; however, various reports reported the low uptake of the vaccines. This study explored the barriers to the COVID-19 vaccine uptake among community members in Tanzania. A qualitative explorative study was conducted in December 2021 and April 2022 in eight regions of Tanzania. Focus group discussions (FGDs) and in-depth i

Using Video Feedback in Collaborative Lesson Research with SEND Teachers of Students with Autism : a Case Report

This study used video feedback in a collaborative development study to help improve teachers’ perceptions of the learning needs of students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and intellectual disabilities (ID) and enhance their active participation in the classroom. Crucially, teachers need the necessary skills to discern students’ subtle communications, as students with ASD and co-occurring ID

Reproducing or Counteracting Inequality: Challenges in Social Work with homeless/ness

Social work with homeless/ness in Sweden is usually performed by social services in local municipalities highly dependent on local, non-state actors, especially landlords’ goodwill, to cooperate with social services and support vulnerable peoples’ housing. The social services dependency on such actors is challenging and exploitation by landlords can affect the actual organization of social service

Modelling the effect of different core sizes and magnetic interactions inside magnetic nanoparticles on hyperthermia performance

We present experimental intrinsic loss power (ILP) values, measured at an excitation frequency of 1 MHz and at relatively low field amplitudes of 3.4–9.9 kA/m, as a function of the mean core diameter, for selected magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs). The mean core sizes ranged from ca. 8 nm to 31 nm. Transmission electron microscopy indicated that those with smaller core sizes (less than ca. 22 nm) were

Seeing for understanding : Unlocking the potential of visual research in information systems

In this paper, we argue that information researchers should use images as a source of data. The information systems field is overwhelmingly visual in nature. Not only is the Internet crammed with images, but also almost every detail observed during fieldwork in different research settings can be captured in the form of digital images. Yet, we rarely engage with those images. Except for sporadic vi

Culture and management control interdependence : An analysis of control choices that complement the delegation of authority in Western cultural regions

This study examines the influence of cultural regions on the interdependence between delegation of authority and other management control (MC) practices. In particular, we assess whether one of the central contentions of agency theory, that incentive contracting and delegation are jointly determined, holds in different cultural regions. Drawing on prior literature, we hypothesise that the MC pract

User involvement in housing recovery : Cases from Haiyan affected areas in the Philippines

The aim of this study is to develop a better understanding of the relation between housing recovery and user involvement from a capability perspective. The thesis studies housing recovery in areas affected by typhoon Haiyan, which struck the Philippines on 8th November 2013. The focus is on three perspectives: a) approaches to housing reconstruction, b) explanation for unexpected housing outcomes,

Young tourists visiting strip clubs and paying for sex

Little is known about young adults' use of strip clubs and prostitution during their holidays abroad. This study examined this issue with a sample of 1125 Danish tourists between the ages of 16 and 34, and sought data about the frequency with which they paid for sex and attended strip clubs while they were on holiday. The tourists were surveyed at a Bulgarian airport before their return trip home.
