International Myeloma Working Group guidelines for serum-free light chain analysis in multiple myeloma and related disorders

The serum immunoglobulin-free light chain (FLC) assay measures levels of free kappa and lambda immunoglobulin light chains. There are three major indications for the FLC assay in the evaluation and management of multiple myeloma and related plasma cell disorders (PCD). In the context of screening, the serum FLC assay in combination with serum protein electrophoresis (PEL) and immunofixation yields

Family therapy in poorly controlled juvenile IDDM: effects on diabetic control, self-evaluation and behavioural symptoms

Diabetic control, behavioural symptoms and self-evaluation were assessed in 25 children with IDDM who were in poor metabolic control (P group), before and subsequent to one of two treatment conditions: family therapy and conventional treatment (C). In addition, data were collected from 12 patients in optimal control (O group). Prior to treatment the patients in poor control were rated higher than

Moisture Transport in Porous Media. Modelling Based on Kirchhoff Potentials

Popular Abstract in Swedish Avhandlingen innehåller sju artiklar. Modeller för beräkning av fuktinträngning vid stegäThe work presented in this thesis is focused on the development of the new concept to describe isothermal moisture transport using Kirchhoff potentials. The first four papers deal with moisture transport in porous media using Kirchhoff potentials. The last three papers deal with wood. Here the theory is extended to the case of anisotropic moisture transport. The seven papers have the following con

Recovery of cognitive and emotional functioning following withdrawal of topiramate maintenance therapy

The present investigation reports cognitive improvement following withdrawal of topiramate (TPM) maintenance therapy in two patients with intractable seizures. The first patient received a neuropsychological evaluation after 10 months of adjunctive TPM treatment and was reassessed after complete withdrawal. The second patient received a first evaluation without TPM therapy. A reassessment was cond

Investigation of binding event perturbations caused by elevated QCM-D oscillation amplitude

We report measurements with the quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D) technique, with focus on how the shear oscillation amplitude of the sensor surface influences biorecognition binding events. Technically, this is made as reported recently ( M. Edvardsson, M. Rodahl, B. Kasemo, F. Hook, Anal. Chem., 2005, 77( 15), 4918-4926) by operating the QCM in dual frequency mode;

Calibration and assessment of channel-specific biases in microarray data with extended dynamical range

Background: Non-linearities in observed log-ratios of gene expressions, also known as intensity dependent log-ratios, can often be accounted for by global biases in the two channels being compared. Any step in a microarray process may introduce such offsets and in this article we study the biases introduced by the microarray scanner and the image analysis software. Results: By scanning the same sp

Reduction of decomposition rates of Scots pine needle litter due to heavy-metal pollution

Decomposition of unpolluted Scots pine needle litter was studied in two heavy-metal-pollution gradients in Sweden; one near a brass mill and the other around a primary smelter. In the latter area locally collected polluted Scots pine needle litter was also incubated. Decomposition rates were strongly influenced by the metal pollution and a decrease in the rate of mass-loss occurred. In the brass-m

Fe II emission spectra in AGN: observations and theoretical interpretation

The enrichment of Fe, relative to alpha elements such as O and Mg, represents a potential means to measure the ages of quasi-stellar object (QSO) host galaxies and probe nucleosynthesis in the early universe. QSOs exhibit prominent Fe II features and Mg II 2800 angstrom resonance doublet emission in the ultraviolet. Although chemical evolutionary models predict that the Fe/Mg abundance ratio decre

Single-step purification of human C4b-binding protein (C4BP) by affinity chromatography on a peptide derived from a streptococcal surface protein.

Many Gram-positive bacteria express surface proteins that bind human plasma proteins. These bacterial proteins, and derivatives of them, are of interest for analysis of bacterial pathogenesis and as immunochemical tools. Well-characterized examples include the IgG-binding reagents staphylococcal protein A and streptococcal protein G, and the recently described streptococcal IgA-binding peptide Sap

Reincentivizing- a new theory of work and work absence

Background: Work capacity correlates weakly to disease concepts, which in turn are insufficient to explain sick leave behavior. With data mainly from Sweden, a welfare state with high sickness absence rates, our aim was to develop an explanatory theory of how to understand and deal with work absence and sick leave. Methods: We used classic grounded theory for analyzing data from >130 interviews wi

PRODUCT IDENTIFICATION SYSTEMS FOR CONSTRUCTION AND FACILITY MANAGEMENT

This paper presents a state-of-the-art analysis of current systems for product identification utilized within the Swedish sector of construction and facility management. The study also discusses the concept of object and class identification in information systems development. The purpose of the study is to identify and define concepts in a common information structure that provides a framework fo

Sediment pigments as biomarkers of environmental change

This thesis demonstrates the usefulness of sedimentary pigments as biomarkers of environmental change in estuarine systems and as biomarkers in lakes in relation to climate change. These are two fields where sediment pigment records as measured by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) are emerging areas of study. A detailed study was undertaken to examine the effects of different storage o

On the Use of Ultrasound Phase Data for Arterial Characterization

I avhandlingen presenteras fem olika metoder som alla är baserade på biAtherosclerosis is one of the major causes of death in the world. It is an inflammatory disease in the arteries which causes a gradual increase in arterial wall thickness and stiffness. Eventually a plaque could be formed, protruding into the artery and partially occluding the blood flow. Rupture of such a plaque could cause cardiac infarction or stroke. This dissertation revolves around finding b

Analysis of multi-phase transport phenomena with catalyst reactions in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells - A review

A review is presented for two-phase modeling approaches to study various transport processes and reactions in polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells along with some experimental work. It has been noted that water management is still one of the least accurate modeled phenomena. The lackness in complete descriptive models for water management inside PEM fuel cells can be attributed to the com

Informed Conditioning on Clinical Covariates Increases Power in Case-Control Association Studies

Genetic case-control association studies often include data on clinical covariates, such as body mass index (BMI), smoking status, or age, that may modify the underlying genetic risk of case or control samples. For example, in type 2 diabetes, odds ratios for established variants estimated from low-BMI cases are larger than those estimated from high-BMI cases. An unanswered question is how to use

Smoking and obesity associated BDNF gene variance predicts total and cardiovascular mortality in smokers.

OBJECTIVE: The brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) locus has been implicated in psychiatric and substance related disorders. Recent genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have shown strong associations between single nucleotide polymorphisms in BDNF, smoking behaviour and high body mass index (BMI). Our aim was to test whether genetic BDNF variation alters the risk of smoking related morbidit

A palaeomagnetic and Ar-40/Ar-39 study of mafic dykes in southern Sweden: A new Early Neoproterozoic key-pole for the Baltic Shield and implications for Sveconorwegian and Grenville loops

We present the results of palaeomagnetic and Ar-40/Ar-39 studies of the Proterozoic mafic dykes in the Norrkoping and Falun areas of the southern Sweden. The primary remanence of two 939 +/- 3 Ma dykes is supported by the rigorous baked contact test. The remanence direction of two other dykes, one of which was previously U-Pb dated at 946 +/- 1 Ma is close to the reverse direction of 939 Ma dykes.
