Biomedical Ultrasound

The first clinical application of ultrasound for diagnostic purposes was developed in Lund in 1953, when the physicist Hellmuth Hertz and the cardiologist Inge Edler were the first to analyze the motion of heart valves. Since then, the technology has undergone extensive development and is now the most widely used imaging modality in healthcare. Our group conducts research, develops, and evaluates

Deterministic rendezvous in graphs

Two mobile agents having distinct identifiers and located in nodes of an unknown anonymous connected graph, have to meet at some node of the graph. We present fast deterministic algorithms for this rendezvous problem.

Non-invasive optical monitoring of free and bound oxygen in humans

Background: Possibilities of detecting oxygen - both in its free form, as gas in the lungs, and in its bound form, as oxygenated hemoglobin - have been explored in this thesis. Perfusion and oxygenation of vital organs (e.g., heart, brain and kidneys) may be severely compromised in critical illness or major trauma, which is why blood is rapidly diverted to those organs to improve chances of surviv

Non-Invasive Measures of Heart Failure

Trots att det är så vanligt och allvarligt, saknas i dagsläget objektiva mått på hjärtsvikt – det finns alltså ingen ”linjal” för att mäta huHeart failure is a clinical syndrome characterized by an inability of the heart to meet the metabolic demands of the body. Approximately 1-2% of the population in the western society has the diagnosis, and the 5-year mortality rate is comparable with the common cancer diagnoses. The lack of reliable objective measures of heart failure motivates research in this direction. Blood flow is an essentia

Cyclic Nucleotide Phosphodiesterase 3B: Regulation in rat adipocytes and 3T3-L1 cells

Syftet med mina studier har varit att undersöka hur metabolismen i kroppens fettceller (adipocyter) regleras, med fokus på ett insulinkänsligt enzInsulin stimulation of rat adipocytes results in phosphorylation and activation of the cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase 3B (PDE3B), a key enzyme in the antilipolytic signalling pathway of this hormone. In this thesis, the site phosphorylated in PDE3B upon stimulation of rat adipocytes with insulin and/or the beta-adrenergic agonist, isoproterenol is identified. In addition, upstream components

Resistin, an adipokine with potent proinflammatory properties

The adipokine resistin is suggested to be an important link between obesity and insulin resistance. In the present study, we assessed the impact of resistin as inflammatogenic cytokine in the setting of arthritis. In vitro experiments on human PBMC were performed to assess cytokine response and transcription pathways of resistin-induced inflammation. Proinflammatory properties of resistin were eva

Socio-demographic and economics factors associated with suicide mortality in Iran, 2001-2010 : application of a decomposition model

BACKGROUND: Suicide is a major global health problem, especially among youth. Suicide is known to be associated with a variety of social, economic, political and religious factors, vary across geographical and cultural regions. The current study aimed to investigate the effects of socioeconomic factors on suicide mortality rate across different regions in Iran.METHODS: The data on distribution of

Routine clinical laboratory tests correspond to increased serum levels of 3-hydroxy fatty acids, markers of endotoxins, in cardiosurgery patients

Introduction: Endotoxemia developing during cardiosurgery as elevated endotoxin concentrations in patient's serum may prevail over 24 h after operation. A major reason is thought to be increased gut permeability resulting in endotoxin and bacterial leakage. In this study we aimed to measure endotoxin levels on samples obtained during and after cardiovascular procedures and compare them with clinic

Brachyspira hyodysenteriae and other strongly beta-haemolytic and indole-positive spirochaetes isolated from mallards (Anas platyrhynchos)

The aims of the current study were to collect intestinal spirochaetes (genus Brachyspira) from farmed and wild mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) and to identify and classify those isolates that phenotypically resembled Brachyspira hyodysenteriae, an enteric pathogen of pigs. The isolation rate of Brachyspira spp. was high from both farmed (93%) and wild mallards (78%). In wild mallards, it appeared th

Current Debates on Citizenship and Belonging: Multiculturalism, Gender and Sexuality

Debates around gender and sexuality currently inform important negotiations of citizenship and belonging in Canada. In this chapter, we broadly outline main areas of research in the social sciences for Canadianists from German-speaking countries. We focus on two separate but interrelated themes that have recently gained a particular salience in Canadian society and politics: 1) Gender and the oste

Tryptophan-related Neurotransmission in the Brain: Disturbances Associated with Experimental Hepatic Encephalopathy

In the present study, L-tryptophan (TRP)-related disturbances in the brain in experimental hepatic encephalopathy (HE) were investigated. The endogenous NMDA-receptor agonist and L-TRP metabolite quinolinic acid (QUIN) has been suggested to be involved in the pathogenesis of HE. We were, however, unable to detect any increases in QUIN levels in rats subjected to a chronic portacaval shunt (PCS) ei
