Biomedical Ultrasound

The first clinical application of ultrasound for diagnostic purposes was developed in Lund in 1953, when the physicist Hellmuth Hertz and the cardiologist Inge Edler were the first to analyze the motion of heart valves. Since then, the technology has undergone extensive development and is now the most widely used imaging modality in healthcare. Our group conducts research, develops, and evaluates

Wave Setup in River Entrances - Field Surveys of Wonboyn Lake Estuary and Tallebudgera Creek Estuary, Australia

It is unclear whether wave setup exists in river entrances and previous studies have shown that it is virtually non-existent in trained river entrances. However, conclusive studies have not been made on semi-trained and untrained river entrances. In this study, two field surveys were conducted in Australia; one at Wonboyn Lake Estuary, New South Wales, and one at Tallebudgera Creek Estuary, Queens

Universal design and equitable healthcare for women : an overview of current literature and prospects

This paper presents an overview of the literature on universal design for equitable healthcare. The central inquiry in the current paper is a critical design-for-all challenge: how might universal design contribute to providing equitable healthcare for women suffering from pelvic floor injuries during birth? This study delves into some of the explicit and implicit needs of this deprioritized minor

The Fama and French Three-Factor Model - Evidence from the Swedish Stock Market

The present study adds to the sparse published Swedish literature on the performance of the Fama and French Three-Factor model on the Swedish stock market. The ability of the model to measure the cost of equity is compared with that of the CAPM. The tests are conducted in time periods with and without financial turmoil. The Fama and French Three-Factor Model is found to provide improved explanator

"De som skiljer ut sig i sammanhanget, som alltid, är Sverigedemokraterna" En diskursanalys av Sverigedemokraternas försök att utforma och etablera partiets diskurs kring invandringspolitiken

Abstract Through the concept of discourse we understand how the reality in one domain is constructed through linguistic combinations, where each of the signs receives its meaning in relation to one another . In the following essay I analyze, through Laclau and Mouffe’s discourse theory, how the Sweden Democrats is trying to frame and establish their political discourse on immigration in the Swed

Non-Invasive Measures of Heart Failure

Trots att det är så vanligt och allvarligt, saknas i dagsläget objektiva mått på hjärtsvikt – det finns alltså ingen ”linjal” för att mäta huHeart failure is a clinical syndrome characterized by an inability of the heart to meet the metabolic demands of the body. Approximately 1-2% of the population in the western society has the diagnosis, and the 5-year mortality rate is comparable with the common cancer diagnoses. The lack of reliable objective measures of heart failure motivates research in this direction. Blood flow is an essentia

Protein aggregation: Computational modeling and Monte Carlo algorithm development

Although organisms have evolved sophisticated cellular mechanisms for regulating their various protein networks, proteins sometimes start to clump together in an uncontrolled way. The aggregation of proteins has been associated with a range of serious diseases. In this thesis we develop and apply theoretical computer models to investigate different aspects of the aggregation process, and its under

Integrated optical read-out for polymeric cantilever-based sensors

Cantilevers are thin beams clamped at one end and during the last 10 years they have emerged as an interesting new type of bio/chemical sensor. The specific recognition of a chemical manifests itself as a bending of the cantilever from the generated surface stress. Conventionally the read-out used for this type of

Aid, Development and the Role of Culture

The role of culture is often overlooked in economics. Despite culture permeating every part of society and differing greatly between countries, economists have had little time for it. However, as economics slowly move away from the neoclassical assumptions of perfectly functioning markets, culture is becoming more and more relevant. The aim of this thesis is to look into the connections between cu

The Supply Chain Cockpit

Organizations have over the latest decades seen a growing need for new multi-dimensional measures for evaluating their business performance, since traditional accounting models for long have proven not to be applicable to the modern business environment. Together with the need for timely information this has caused extensive requirements on the ERP-systems which often do not meet the needed requir

This essay in literature science focuses on the representation and meaning of food in Swedish working class literature during two different eras in the 20th century. On the one hand the literature consists of five different authorships from 1925–1945 and on the other hand five authorships from 1985–2005. On the basis of culture materialist theory, the aim of the study is to investigate how and why

Efficiency of two-phase methods with focus on a planned population-based case-control study on air pollution and stroke

ABSTRACT: We plan to conduct a case-control study to investigate whether exposure to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) increases the risk of stroke. In case-control studies, selective participation can lead to bias and loss of efficiency. A two-phase design can reduce bias and improve efficiency by combining information on the non-participating subjects with information from the participating subjects. In ou

The association between retinopathy, nephropathy, cardiovascular disease and long-term metabolic control in type 1 diabetes mellitus: a 5 year follow-up study of 442 adult patients in routine care

The aim of the present study was to examine mean HbA1c and blood pressure levels during a 5 year period in 442 type 1 adult diabetic patients in relation to the incidence and progression of retinopathy, nephropathy and to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The study showed, that in patients under routine care at a diabetic unit with four visits to the out-patient clinic per year, the intraind

Boken ger i

Mental workload in basic civil aviation training

Although the aviation industry has gone through great technological and commercial change in the last decades, basic civil aviation training has not changed accordingly. The consequences of the changes in civil aviation have rarely resulted in research programs in the field of basic civil aviation training and this phase, where future pilots gain their first sets of skills and knowledge, has long

Validation of Wiener Fahrprobe – A method description.

On the decision of the Swedish government, the Swedish National Road Administration (SNRA) has started a large-scale trial with Intelligent Speed Adaptation (ISA) in urban areas. One of the four test sites is the city of Lund. At the Department of Technology and Society, Lund University, research about ISA has been carried out since 1986 and the first field study was carried out in 1993. The ongoi
